who’s watching? 👁️ The problem isn’t just how many cameras are watching Americans, it’s who has access to the information they collect. Flock now has roughly 120,000 cameras across 49 states, creating a nationwide network where participating law-enforcement agencies can share and search vehicle data across state lines. You don’t have to be suspected of a crime for your vehicle to be captured and logged. More than 50 law-enforcement officers have been accused of misusing Flock, including alleged stalking of romantic partners and other people in their personal lives. Just this month, a Florida officer was accused of using Flock to track his estranged wife’s vehicle 717 times, allegedly using false justifications for the searches. In one 2026 case in Arkansas, a Flock camera misread a single character on an innocent couple’s license plate and flagged their vehicle as stolen. Officers detained the couple at gunpoint while their six-week-old baby was in the car, only realizing afterward that the plate didn’t actually match the stolen vehicle. And in Colorado last September, police used Flock data to accuse a woman of stealing a $25 package because her vehicle was recorded driving through the area around the time of the theft. She was innocent and ultimately had to use her own location history, vehicle footage and doorbell footage to prove she wasn’t the thief. Some people say, “If you’re not doing anything illegal, you have nothing to worry about” but you don’t have to commit a crime to become the subject of police attention. You can simply be in the wrong place, driving the wrong car, or mistakenly flagged by the system. And once police believe the technology has identified you, you can be treated as guilty until proven innocent.
