Mustangs are an interesting topic because they’re neither livestock nor wildlife, they’re an established feral population. They fill a niche left behind by the native horses that went extinct during the last Ice Age. What should be done is place them in a separate category and practice something like TNR for feral cats and dogs. A portion of stallions should be gelded after a genetic test to determine which ones would positively contribute to the health of the herds. That would greatly reduce numbers and it’s not terribly invasive as roundups are. The tricky part is so many people consider them wildlife, but they do cause damage to the environment and cannot be hunted, so they’re more like livestock, except nobody owns them or is responsible for them. BLM tries to manage them but it’s kind of an all or nothing situation: either leave them alone and let nature take entire herds if conditions are not great, or round them up for adoption and spend money keeping them fed in holding pens. Neither side of the argument is going to be happy with that though

hooved animals compact the soil, exacerbating the effects of drought. as non-native species, they have no natural predators or food source, so they are starving out there without the help of the people insisting they be out there
