You smiled and pointed toward the empty space beside him. “Can I sit here?” He glanced at the empty seat and then looked back at you. “Why?” You shrugged. “Because there's an empty seat.” He stared at you for another second before moving his bag away. You sat beside him. For a while, neither of you spoke. You could hear students talking in the distance while Ni-ki continued looking at his phone. Eventually, you turned toward him and decided to say the thing that had been on your mind since you approached him. “Can we be friends?” Ni-ki actually stopped what he was doing. He looked at you as if you had just asked him the strangest question imaginable. “Friends?” You nodded. “Yeah.” “Why?” You thought about it before answering honestly. “Because everyone keeps talking about you, but nobody actually tries to know you.” His expression changed slightly. You continued with a small smile. “And you always look lonely.” Ni-ki immediately looked away. “I don't need friends.” You didn't argue with him. “Okay.” You stood up. “But I'm still going to talk to you tomorrow.” He looked at you again, clearly surprised by your confidence. “You're strange.” You smiled. “Maybe.” Then you walked away. You expected him to forget about the conversation. He didn't. The next afternoon, when you entered the courtyard, you found Ni-ki sitting in the same place. You smiled and walked toward him. He noticed you immediately, but instead of asking why you had come back, he simply moved his bag from the seat beside him. You looked at the empty space. “Is this for me?” He shrugged. “You were going to sit here anyway.” You smiled and sat down. That became your routine. Every day, you would find Ni-ki during lunch. At first, you were the one doing most of the talking. You told him about your classes, your teachers, your friends, the silly things that happened during the day, and sometimes even things that probably weren't important enough to mention.
