Spring temperatures means it’s almost time to transplant new plants! If you didn’t get around to planting new plants in the garden in the fall, you may want to start acclimating those plants to the outside temperatures. Hardening off seedlings is a crucial step before transplanting them into your spring garden. This gradual acclimation process helps indoor-grown plants adjust to outdoor conditions—direct sunlight, fluctuating temperatures, wind, and drier air—reducing transplant shock and improving establishment. - Begin 7–14 days before your planned transplant date, once outdoor temperatures stay reliably above 45–50°F - Start on a mild, preferably cloudy or overcast day to minimize initial stress. - Place plants in a sheltered, shaded spot (porch, under a tree, or beside a building) protected from strong wind for 2–3 hours the first day. Bring them back indoors at night. - Each subsequent day, gradually increase outdoor time by 1–2 hours and introduce more direct sunlight (morning light first, then longer periods). - Over the week or two, build up to full-day exposure, including overnight stays outside for the final 1–2 days. - Reduce watering frequency slightly to encourage tougher growth, but never let plants wilt. - Avoid windy, rainy, or very cold days; use a cold frame if available for added protection. Following these steps prepares your transplants for success and helps ensure healthy growth once in the garden. What's your go-to method for hardening off, or which crops are you starting this spring? Share in the comments! #HardeningOff #SpringGardening #plants #TransplantTips #TikTokLearningCampaign
