Designing a garden bed right on the edge of the woods = beauty and strategy 🌿 For my friend’s space, we needed something that could handle deer pressure, thrive in partial sun/shade, and stay low maintenance (because let’s be honest… not everyone wants a high-maintenance garden). That meant skipping things like hostas 🚫🦌 and focusing on hardy, reliable perennials and shrubs that will grow better year after year with minimal effort. We layered this bed with intention: ✨ Taller structure in the back (hello limelights + native grasses for that natural feel her husband wanted) ✨ Mid-layer shrubs like azaleas and weigela tucked in for depth and color ✨ Low-growing perennials in the front—salvia, lavender, sedum—for texture, movement, and season-long interest The only real “extra” care? A little deer repellent on the limelights to protect those blooms. Other than that—spring cleanup, fresh mulch, and you’re good to go. This is one of those designs that stands strong on its own… but still leaves room to play with annuals if she wants to have fun with it each season 🌸 Living in a colder zone doesn’t mean you can’t have a full, layered, beautiful landscape—you just have to choose smart.
