Three days after Syrena’s rescue, she ate her very first fish. 🐢💙 It may not seem like a big milestone, but to us, it was everything. When Syrena was rescued, she was severely emaciated, covered in barnacles, and dangerously anemic. She had likely gone a long time without eating, and we honestly didn’t know if she was strong enough to recover. So when she finally showed interest in food, we celebrated. This wasn’t just her first meal. It was the first real sign that she was fighting to survive. But we couldn’t let her eat as much as she wanted. After an animal has gone so long without eating, feeding too much too quickly can actually be dangerous. The digestive tract often slows dramatically—or can even stop moving normally altogether (a condition called GI stasis). That’s why we started slowly, limiting her to just five fish per day while carefully monitoring her recovery. And yes…that meant documenting everything—including her daily bowel movements. 😅 It might sound funny, but every normal bowel movement told us her digestive system was waking back up and that her body was beginning to heal. Recovery isn’t just about getting an animal to eat. It’s about giving their body the time it needs to recover safely. For us, this little meal wasn’t just breakfast.
