most classical creatures are nothing like their original mythology and night as well be new creatures. and fantasy books make new monsters all the time - they just don't become standardized now because of copyright. vampires are public domain. dementors are not

I think we do have modern monsters, though it’s usually in niche books. Like a there’s a modern equivalent to a ‘genies Loki’ where it’s a sentient magical Rock that controls dungeons, referred as a ‘dungeon core.’ And the concept of a hive mind of monsters seems to be relatively recent (not sure about if this is ACTUALLY kinda modern, or just I haven’t herd of any)
