the landlord gave me quite notice while my rent was still on, does it mean I can not have 6 months after the expiration of my rent.if am giving that 6 months will I pay for the 6 months because am a yearly tenant, thanks waiting for reply

my lawyer came to serve me a quit notice of 6 months while my rent is still running. the six months quite notice was served while my rent is still on and I ask him while will he do that when my rent has not expired and he said that's why he served me the letter on time. is that valid too?? I didn't argue coz am waiting for the rent to expire next year march then I will now start my own because that's when I think the notice should start.
