@asean: Fifty years ago, ASEAN turned a shared aspiration for peace into a lasting commitment. Signed in 1976, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) established principles of mutual respect, non-interference, peaceful settlement of disputes, renunciation of the threat or use of force, and effective cooperation. What began as an agreement among ASEAN’s founding members gradually grew alongside the region. As ASEAN expanded, all eleven ASEAN Member States came together under the TAC's principles, while partners from beyond Southeast Asia also joined this commitment to peaceful relations and cooperation. Today, as ASEAN commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the TAC, the Treaty reflects how a regional commitment made five decades ago has grown into a framework connecting ASEAN with partners around the world.
