@jupiterandbaby: Waking up from heavy sedation is raw, high stakes, and completely unpredictable, specially with an unhandled horse. In Part 5, we dive into the most dangerous phase of Aurora’s hoof care procedure: getting her back on her feet safely. With her strong maternal drive pushing her to fight through the drugs to reach Astro, her adrenaline took over fast. Without a padded hospital room in the field, Dr. Nick Morrow stayed right in the pen, using his experience with wild mustangs and exotics to anticipate her movement and keep her guided away from danger. We’re also tackling two of your biggest questions from the comments: why a reversal drug couldn't be used for her ketamine, and the real truth behind sedation transfer through milk to nursing foals. Part 6 drops tomorrow 🐴 we’re diving into her official long term hoof rehab plan for her rotated coffin bones and what her future at the sanctuary looks like! #equinepodiatry #horserescue #karmaranch #rescuehorse #AnimalRescue

Kudos to everyone that was involved. I’m watching through the phone and I’m on biting my nails, so I can only imagine what it was like in person.

It seems like one of the biggest questions on Part 5 of this series is: Why didn't we remove Astro during the procedure?
If you haven't yet, please go back and watch Part 1. It was extremely difficult just to get Aurora calm enough for the vet to administer IV sedation. If we had taken 7.5 week old Astro away to a place where they couldn't see or hear each other, Aurora’s stress and adrenaline would have spiked so high that we likely never would have gotten her safely sedated.
To completely prevent a mother and foal from hearing each other, people typically have to move them to entirely different properties miles away. Foals are loud, and a stressed baby calls frantically for his mama. Taking a 7.5-l week old baby away from his mom for hours (the whole procedure was a little over 4 hours) would have been deeply traumatic and dangerous for both of them. Keeping Astro in the adjacent paddock where they could still see each other was the absolute safest choice. Was it a stressful day? Yes. But removing him completely would have been a thousand times worse.
Most importantly: Aurora is doing great! I’ve shared multiple updates in my stories since her trim, and she is moving so much better.
Part 6 drops tonight! We’ll be discussing her future, her long term recovery plan, and how we plan to manage her hoof care moving forward—because routine heavy sedation is obviously not a safe or viable long-term option for her body or her heart. Thank you all for following along and supporting her journey! ❤️
