That’s one funky-looking turtle! 🐢💚 With a neck like that, it's no surprise they're called side-necked turtles! Unlike most turtles that pull their heads straight back into their shells when threatened, side-necked turtles fold their long necks sideways beneath the edge of their shells instead. Meet the Rote Island Snake-necked Turtle (Chelodina mccordi mccordi). Native to Rote Island, Indonesia, this semi-aquatic species once inhabited shallow lakes, swamps, marshes, and even rice paddies. Despite being legally protected in Indonesia, the Rote Island Snake-necked Turtle is now presumed extinct in the wild due to habitat loss, collection for the illegal pet trade, and the introduction of predatory fish. Here at our Turtle Survival Center, this species has a second chance. As part of our conservation breeding program, we've successfully hatched 68 Rote Island Snake-necked Turtle hatchlings since launching our recovery efforts in 2019. Every hatchling represents hope for one of the world's rarest turtles. Our Turtle Survival Center is home to 850+ turtles representing more than 27 of the world's most endangered species, all receiving expert care as we work to ensure their survival for generations to come.
