This is a nice story but I don’t agree with the conclusion. There is no such thing as doing it “all by yourself” but there is a difference between adequate support and a clutch. The side of the pool was a clutch but THE SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR WAS THE ONE SUPPORTING YOU!!! You didn’t swim alone, you didn’t do it all by yourself. You had a mentor who understood your goals and providing adequate support for you to reach them. Western cultures glorify “independence” but the truth is we never succeed alone… ever. We are either surrounded by people who bring us down or lift us up.

I think this actually affirms the opposite of your hypothesis, because not only did you have the edge in many circumstances leading up to the big risk, but you also had emotional and physical reassurance to take the risk.
