I can forgive mistakes. I can understand someone having a bad day, saying the wrong thing, making a selfish decision, or handling a situation poorly. I don’t expect anybody in my life to be perfect because I’m not perfect either. What I struggle with is when you hurt me and then somehow the entire conversation becomes about the fact that I got hurt. Suddenly we’re analyzing my tone, how emotional I became, why I brought it up the way I did, or why I didn’t respond more calmly, while conveniently skipping over the thing that caused the reaction in the first place. And yes, I’m still responsible for how I respond. Someone hurting me doesn’t give me permission to say or do whatever I want afterward. If my reaction crosses a line, I should take accountability for that too. But accountability has to work both ways. You don’t get to light the match and then act like the fire appeared out of nowhere. Tell me you understand what you did. Tell me what you should’ve done differently. Apologize without immediately attaching a “but” to it. Let me explain how something affected me without treating my feelings like an accusation you need to defeat. That’s what makes relationships feel safe. I don’t need someone who never gets anything wrong. I need someone who can look at me after they do and say, “I understand why that hurt you, and I take responsibility for my part in it.” Because mistakes don’t scare me nearly as much as being with someone who will rewrite an entire situation before they’ll ever admit they made one.
