My mother had one habit I never understood. Every night before going to bed, she would leave the small kitchen light on. Not the hallway light. Not the porch light. Just the little light above the kitchen sink. I used to tell her, “Mum, you should turn that off.” She would smile and say, “I know.” Then she’d walk upstairs. I thought she simply forgot. After my mother died, I started cleaning the house. One night, I noticed the kitchen light was still on. Without thinking, I reached for the switch. Then I stopped. I remembered how she always left it on, so I left it. The next morning, I found an old notebook inside the kitchen drawer. It wasn’t a diary. It was a list. Every page had a date, and beside each date, she had written one small memory: “He came home late tonight.” “He couldn’t find his keys.” “He ate dinner at midnight.” “He said the kitchen light helped him find his way.” I kept reading. Then I realized she wasn’t writing about my father. She was writing about my older brother. He had died when he was nineteen. I barely remembered him. The final entry was from the night he died. It said, “He told me he’d be home before midnight.” Underneath, she had written, “He never came home.” I started crying. But there was one more page. My mother had written a letter to me: “You always wondered why I left the kitchen light on. The truth is, I know your brother isn’t coming home. But for years, I kept thinking about the last thing he said to me. He told me the house looked beautiful from the road because our kitchen light was always on. So I kept it on. Not because I was waiting for him. Because I wanted one part of this house to remember him. Some people leave the world, but they don’t have to leave every little place where they were loved.” I sat at the kitchen table for a long time. That night, I turned off every light in the house. Then I walked back downstairs, switched the little kitchen light on, and left it there. For my mother. For my brother. And for everyone who once walked through that kitchen and made it feel like home. Now, every night before I sleep, I leave that light on. Not because I expect anyone to come back, but because sometimes, love needs a small light to remember where home is.
