By 1987, Patsy Kensit was a high-profile figure in Britain due to her acting roles (such as Absolute Beginners) and childhood modeling. Her band, Eighth Wonder, was struggling to achieve a breakout hit in the UK despite early success in continental Europe. Determined to turn things around, Kensit repeatedly approached Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys at industry parties, asking them to write and produce a track for her. Intrigued by her ambition, they agreed—making "I'm Not Scared" the very first song the Pet Shop Boys ever produced for another artist. Tennant and Lowe dusted off a wordless 1985 demo originally titled "A Roma". Knowing Eighth Wonder had an audience in mainland Europe, they crafted the track specifically with a continental, synth-noir pop sound. Despite being credited to Eighth Wonder, Kensit was the only member of the group who actually performed on the final recording. Neil Tennant wanted to subvert the media’s perception of Kensit: "She was seen as a little girl and a controlled type, and I thought the way that was perceived could be changed... She seemed to me to be a very strong-willed person, slightly ruthless even, and I didn't think it was good she was just portrayed as a sexy bimbo." — Neil Tennant Tennant wrote the lyrics from the perspective of a woman facing down a dangerous, controlling partner or mobster. Lines like "Take these dogs away from me" (inspired by a line from John Betjeman’s poem Senex) framed her character as resolute and defiant. To enhance the song's cinematic, European allure, Tennant structured the English phrasing so it sounded like a direct translation from French. Kensit also spoke French verses on the track, and recorded an all-French version titled "J'ai pas peur" for the B-side. The collaboration paid off, granting Eighth Wonder their biggest hit across Europe and the UK. Satisfied with the composition, the Pet Shop Boys later recorded their own extended, 7-minute version—retaining the female perspective—for their 1988 album Introspective, adding sound clips evocative of the May 1968 Paris student riots to amplify the song's tension.
