@orangutanhaven: Why the orangutan are here at Orangutan Haven? The honest answer is that Orangutan Haven was built because there was no other good option. Our colleagues at the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme have spent years rescuing orangutans from illegal situations and, where possible, releasing them back into the forest to form new wild populations. That work continues. But over time, six orangutans arrived who couldn't go back — too injured, too long away from the wild. Keeping them in metal cages for the rest of their lives, which could stretch to forty or fifty years, wasn't something anyone was prepared to accept. So we built this place. And we very much hope we never need to build another one. All orangutans deserve to live wild and free in the forest.
