Winter stood outside the familiar front door, nervously checking her outfit in her phone screen for the third time. Beside her, Ningning was typing away on her phone, completely unbothered. "Just knock already," Ningning said, rolling her eyes. "You've been smoothing your shirt for two minutes." "I'm just making sure I look decent," Winter muttered, finally reaching out to press the doorbell. She had spent the entire morning coming up with a reason to ask Karina out on that second date. Something low-key, but clearly a date. The door swung open, revealing Ryujin. But instead of her usual lazy greeting, Ryujin’s eyes went wide with instant panic the second she saw Winter holding a paper bag from Karina’s favorite bakery. "Oh. Hey," Ryujin said quickly, stepping out onto the porch and slamming the front door shut behind her. "What are you guys doing here?" Winter blinked, confused. "We came to hang out? And I... brought some pastries." "Right, awesome, but today is actually a bad time," Ryujin said, her voice a little too high. She physically blocked the door, spreading her arms out. "The house is... messy. Very messy." "Ryujin, we literally sat in your trash three days ago," Ningning said, raising an eyebrow. She pushed past Ryujin's arm and twisted the doorknob. "Move, it's freezing out here." "Wait, Ning—" It was too late. The door opened, and Winter stepped into the entryway right behind Ningning. The living room wasn't messy. In fact, it looked nice. Sitting on the couch was a tall guy in a crisp denim jacket. On the coffee table in front of him was a massive bouquet of yellow tulips and a takeaway bag from an expensive sushi spot—Karina's absolute favorite. Karina was standing near the couch, holding a vase of water, looking up as the front door opened. The room went dead silent. Winter completely froze, her fingers tightening around the cheap bakery bag until the paper crinkled loudly. Her stomach did a sharp, uncomfortable flip. "Oh, hi guys," Karina said, her voice cheerful, though her eyes darted to Winter’s tense posture. "You're back today?" The guy on the couch stood up, offering a polite smile. "Hi, I'm Sunghoon." "Winter," Ryujin practically yelled, grabbing Winter’s arm with a grip like steel and spinning her around. "Right! You wanted to try that new console game I bought, right? The one with the dragons? Let's go to my room right now!" "Yeah!" Ningning chimed in, immediately catching on and grabbing Winter’s other arm. "I love dragons. Let's go watch Ryujin play dragons!" "Wait, but—" Winter stumbled backward as her two friends physically hauled her toward the stairs. She couldn't stop her gaze from snapping back to Karina. Karina hadn't moved. She was watching Winter closely, noticing the way Winter’s jaw was tight, the flush rising on her neck, and the slight glare directed at the guy on the couch. A subtle, mischievous glint appeared in Karina’s eyes, a small smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. She didn't explain who Sunghoon was. She just let Winter stew. "Have fun upstairs," Karina called out smoothly, taking the tulips from Sunghoon and setting them right in the middle of the table. "I'll be down here if you need anything." Ryujin shoved Winter into her bedroom and slammed the door shut, locking it with an audible click. Winter dropped the bakery bag onto Ryujin's desk, her chest tight. "Who is that?" "Okay, don't freak out," Ryujin sighed, leaning her back against the door. "That's Sunghoon. He's in unnie's business club. He's been chasing her for like... three months." "Does she like him?" Winter asked, the words coming out sharper than she intended. "She thinks he's nice," Ryujin shrugged, leaning back against the door. "They've gone on a couple of coffee runs. But honestly? Unnie's been pretty confusing lately. I thought she was into him until, you know... she kissed your cheek on the sidewalk three nights ago." The room went completely silent for a full two seconds.
