Here's a simple progression you can do for improving pancakes! Learning to fall is a key skill in sport for athleticism and safety. If we can fall effectively we can be comfortable sprawling at fast speeds, be able to get up quickly and land in positions that are safe. We practice and get better at it to help prevent injuries from falling. If we have this skill in our bag (falling and tracking to pancake or another sprawl dig), the body/mind will see this as an opportunity more often and choose it faster with enough reps. Basically we'll respond faster and have a better chance of picking it up. Pancakes aren't the only way to pick it up, but its a good skill to have while laying it out. This progression starts on the floor with basics of falling from a low height and tracking/contact accuracy. You can have someone toss for you as well for all of these but this is great if don't have a partner. Then you need to get used to laying it out from a kneeling position or crouched and ready to sprawl. Then adding speed into that position gradually and starting from a defensive position. You can keep adding more speed into the sprawl and incorporate different situations, paths, deviations etc. It's also a good idea to work both hands and getting back up quickly, staying in the play! A lot to it but hope this helps!
