There is a word we use in relationships, leadership, work, and business that costs us more than we realise: Fine. “Are you okay?” Fine. “How did that conversation go?” Fine. “Is everything working?” Fine. And sometimes, fine means nothing is fine. Sometimes it means, “I honestly do not know where to start.” Sometimes it means, “I do not trust this space enough to tell you what is really happening.” Sometimes it means, “I have been carrying this for so long that I have forgotten what it feels like to put it down.” And sometimes, fine simply means, “I would rather avoid the discomfort of telling the truth.” That is where the problem begins. Because fine protects the surface while quietly damaging what is underneath. In relationships, it creates emotional distance. In leadership, it hides problems until they become expensive. In business, it gives everyone the illusion that things are under control while issues continue to grow underneath the surface. We often praise people for being calm, professional, and easy to work with. But there is a difference between composure and suppression. There is a difference between keeping the peace and avoiding the conversation that would actually create peace. Fine keeps the peace. Truth builds the relationship. The strongest leaders are not the ones who make everyone comfortable all the time. They are the ones who create enough trust for people to say: “This is not working.” “I disagree.” “I am struggling.” “I made a mistake.” “We need to have a difficult conversation.” Because the real test of leadership is not whether people can tell you everything is fine. It is whether they feel safe enough to tell you when it is not. So, the next time someone says, “I’m fine,” do not rush to accept the answer. Sometimes the most important conversation is hiding behind that one word.
