I believe it’s more so that people want to save themselves, they want to not need help or support. The left says "these great men are not great we will rectify that and help you", the right says "the reason you’re falling is this obstacle (tax, immigrants etc.) we will remove it so you may rise by your own strength alone and become a great man yourself". The right appeals to peoples pride in a way more efficient manner in the social/cultural context we currently (and for most of time have) exist in.
