Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign in the Gaza Strip aimed at destroying Hamas’s military capabilities and recovering the hostages. Israel has achieved several significant military advantages during the conflict. The Israeli Defense Forces have destroyed or severely damaged large parts of Hamas’s military infrastructure, including tunnels, command centers, weapons facilities and other military targets. One of Israel’s biggest advantages has been territorial military control. By 2026, Israel had established control over a large part of the Gaza Strip. In May 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel controlled about 60% of Gaza and ordered preparations to expand that control to 70%.
