This is the reality of baby nurses in the ER without proper support and mentorship. Blame the hospitals who setup these horrible conditions.

Potassium can be run on a gravity line with NS. Just run it slow. K-riders can be run over 30 minutes. I refuse to believe that the paitent didn't immediately start complaining if it was going in so fast it finished in 5 minutes.

Omg-when I was in clinicals, my instructor almost failed me because I REFUSED to push K+ through a CENTRAL LINE!!! I was in school, but knew K+ was a very particular med, and always had in my head ‘K+ can kill your patient’ one of the floor nurses went to bat for me thankfully 😅

As someone who receives potassium on a regular basis, thank you for scaring the piss out me and yes, I've had potassium pushed. It was EXCRUCIATING.

Aug 19, 2026 Ascension Hospital TN, potassium chloride was used when administering epidural instead of bupivacaine during surgeries. One patient is paralyzed from chest down, and at least 3 other patients are affected

I had a cardiologist try to tell me to push Magnesium once on a relatively stable. And I said "Absolutely not". He tried to tell me that if he orders it as such, I have to do it. I told him "I will pull it from the pyxis and give it to you, but I will not push it." My ER doc wrote an appropriate order to give it piggyback.

Back in the day, in the 90’s, we had potassium on the floor that we mixed in bags of NS. The bottles were kept beside the normal saline flush bottles and in one of our hospitals a nursery nurse grabbed potassium instead of NS as a flush and killed a newborn. After that the potassium was removed from the floor and we didn’t mix our potassium anymore.

I will refuse potassium IVs I’d rather take the horse pills.. I’ve been through a lot of pain in my past.. Kidney stones I’ve had 2 bone marrow biopsies I’ve had potassium IV once or twice never again and my potassium used to get low.. I’ll stick to the pills
