WHY CAN’T YOUR SON HAVE AN AFRO, BRAIDS OR DREADLOCKS? 🤔 For some African parents, certain hairstyles immediately mean: “Bad boy.” “Disrespectful.” “Unprofessional.” “Gangster.” “You won’t get a good job looking like that.” But where did we learn these ideas? An Afro is African hair in its natural form. Braiding has existed across African cultures for generations. Locs have deep histories and meanings across different communities. So why do some of us look at hairstyles connected to Black identity and automatically attach negative character to them? Sometimes it isn’t really about the hair. It’s about stereotypes we inherited. Social expectations. School and workplace standards we grew up with. Fear of how society will judge our children. And sometimes, our own unconscious prejudice about what a “respectable” young Black man should look like. Of course, parents can have reasonable expectations around cleanliness, grooming and appropriate presentation. But hairstyle alone doesn’t tell you whether your son is responsible. It doesn’t tell you whether he’s intelligent. It doesn’t tell you whether he’s respectful. And it certainly doesn’t determine his future. Talk to your son. Understand why he wants the hairstyle. Teach him how to present himself appropriately for different environments. But don’t crush his confidence or identity simply because his appearance doesn’t match the image of the child you expected. BEFORE YOU TELL YOUR SON HIS HAIR IS “BAD”, ASK YOURSELF WHO TAUGHT YOU THAT HIS NATURAL HAIR WAS WRONG. 🤔🌍 #MindShift360 #AfricanParents #AfricanHair #BlackHair #GhanaianParents
