They crushed silver-bearing rock into powder, mixed it with rice paste, shaped it into lumps and fired it in charcoal. Why the rice? Because the starch made an excellent natural binder, holding the fine ore together so it didn’t simply blow away or fall through the charcoal during firing. As it burned, it also left a porous carbon-rich structure that helped the roasting process. Then came the clever bit: add lead, which effectively grabs hold of the silver. Heat it again, oxidise away the lead… and what’s left is metallic silver
