@litemindedtherapy: I get asked this question a lot. What makes rumination so hard to recognize is that it often feels productive. You may genuinely be trying to understand yourself but underneath all that thinking can be a quieter agenda: “If I can understand this perfectly, maybe I won’t have to feel so uncertain, ashamed, rejected, angry, or powerless.” Analysis becomes a way of staying cognitively busy around an emotion rather than fully contacting it & because thinking gives you a temporary sense of control, your brain learns to keep doing it. Actual emotional processing often requires something much less satisfying: allowing an experience to remain partly unresolved. You may never know exactly why someone behaved the way they did, whether you made the “right” choice, or how things would have gone if you acted differently. Healing isn’t always reaching the perfect conclusion. Sometimes it’s noticing the urge to reopen the investigation, letting the feeling exist without solving it again, and turning your attention toward what you want to do with your life now. #rumination #overthinking #therapytok #psychologyfacts #MentalHealth

How someone one forgive themselves after doing something wrong? I can’t get past that part.

This video was timely for me. I have a big decision to make on the horizon, and I can’t stop thinking about it but I think I’m ruminating.

This is really interesting. Feel like I think about what ifs instead of taking steps for change because I’m hung up on past failures or painful experiences. 😭😭

This distinction is so important. Sometimes “thinking it through” is actually just replaying the same loop with no new clarity. 🧠

Two questions: to address this, how does one determine where their rumination stems from? Is it embarrassment, shame, guilt etc? And, how do you transition from rumination to processing?

Thank you for this. I was speaking with a friend the other day who is going through a tough time, in part because of some poor decisions she had made, and was trying to explain to her why it’s important to stop going over and over the regrets in her mind and try to shift her focus on acceptance of the situation as it stands, even without the closure our minds so desperately look for, and start figuring out how she’s going to move forward since she can’t go backwards and fix everything. This video explains exactly what I was trying to say, but in a much more eloquent way, so I’ve sent it to her. 😊

How can someone get over rumination to be able to finally make a decision? It feels like I continue to be stuck in the same situation… for months..

I needed this reminder today as I have been processing something intense and it has felt like I am ruminating but in reality I am processing because I have moved through it slower than maybe I’d like but moving nonetheless. Thank you!

Thank you so much! How would this apply when you don’t get a job even though you made it to the final round? When there isn’t really anything you think you could have done differently. Yet the rejection keeps playing in my mind and hurting me every time
