@fighispost1: Before he became Kessben, one of Kumasi’s most recognisable business names, Stephen Kwabena Boateng was a trained teacher. Kessben taught for three years before leaving the classroom to pursue business. His first major venture was importing used refrigerators and electrical appliances, a modest beginning that would eventually grow into a diversified business empire. From there, Kessben kept spotting opportunities. Travel. Finance. Real estate. Education. Hospitality. Media. His businesses eventually included Kessben Travel & Tours, Kessben Shipping, Kessben Consult, Kessben Computer School, Kessben Driving School, Fosua Hotel, Kessben FM, Kessben TV, Aseda TV and Kessben University College. But perhaps his most powerful transformation was from entrepreneur to institution builder. The boy once nicknamed “Teacher Boateng” for helping classmates with their homework eventually founded Kessben University College. In a striking example of his approach to business, a former resort at Kuntanase was converted into a tertiary institution to expand access to higher education. He also continued reinventing himself, earning a first-class degree in Economics and Law, an MBA in Finance, and later being called to the Ghana Bar in 2022. Now, as Ghana mourns his reported passing at 68, Kessben’s story is worth remembering for more than the businesses that carried his name.
