In 1919, the United States Department of Labor manufactured celluloid buttons that read "We Own Our Own Home" and shipped them into American classrooms. The buttons were sized for a child's shirt. They were given to kids whose families held a deed. Every morning at the bell, seven-year-olds could look across the room and see who was an owner's kid, and who was a renter's kid. This wasn't a school project. It was a federal campaign. The Department of Labor placed posters in factories, sponsored lectures at universities, mailed pamphlets explaining how to get a mortgage. One poster from May 1919 compressed the whole sales pitch into a single argument: a man can borrow money on what he puts into a home, and nothing on rent. The historian Richard Rothstein counted more than two million posters printed for factories alone. And he noted something else: the advertisements pictured white couples and white families, which tells you something precise about whose loyalty was being purchased. A weekly newspaper in Clinton, South Carolina ran the government's message in August 1919. It predicted the coming depletion of, quote, "the unhappy classes of renters and boarders," and warned that any community failing to build risked a reputation for poor patriotism. A federal agency manufactured a status marker, sized it for a child's chest, and used it to sort kids every morning. Whatever else the campaign accomplished, that object tells you what it was designed to do. The phrase "throwing money away on rent" is that 1919 poster with the serial number filed off. It arrives ownerless now, which is the signature of an install that took.
