@compassionatecleaning: People always ask me, “Why don’t you use a shovel?” This is why. Yesterday while I was sweeping, I found a birth certificate and a Social Security card mixed in with everything. I wouldn’t have caught that with a shovel. A lot of the clients I work with are not functioning at their normal capacity at the moment. That’s just the reality. Your brain is a powerful thing, and when you’re overwhelmed and dealing with task paralysis, things that would normally be important can end up mixed in with clothes, papers, garbage, whatever. And before anybody says, “Well, they can just get another birth certificate” I mean yeah Obviously lol. You can order one online. You can go downtown and get one. You can replace a Social Security card too. But look at the capacity this person is functioning at right now. Do you think they need ANOTHER task to do? 😂 That’s the point. Something that might be easy for me or you can feel like another huge task to somebody who already has 500 things they need to do and can’t get themselves to do them. Now we gotta add “replace my birth certificate”and “get another Social Security card” to the list too? 🙃 Now let me be VERY clear. I am not playing find the needle in the haystack. Customers are advised to secure “ keep “ items before the service. I cannot possibly know what is underneath every pile, inside every bag, mixed in with every piece of clothing, etc. That is impossible. I do What I do, however, is stay aware. I know the environments I work in. I know important things can be mixed in with what looks like garbage. So while I’m working, my brain is automatically on alert. I’m not specifically looking for your birth certificate. I didn’t know a birth certificate was there. But because I’m paying attention to what’s passing in front of me, I have a better chance of catching it. That’s why I use a broom and dustpan. With a shovel, you’re picking up a huge amount of stuff at once and dumping it into a garbage bag. Am I going to catch everything with a broom and dustpan? Absolutely not. I’m human. But I can at least give myself a better chance of catching something important before it goes out and yesterday, that little bit of extra awareness saved somebody from having two more tasks added to a list they’re already struggling to get through. That’s why I do things the way I do them. #compassionatecleaning #doitwithcompassion
