On my 16th birthday, my parents put a card on the kitchen table before I left for school. I didn’t take it because I thought it would be disrespectful since they were still asleep, and when I came home from school, it was gone. I didn’t “deserve it” since I was ungrateful and left it there. I’m 28 and still think about it to this day.
