I used to use my Apple Watch daily. If I was driving slow, it tracked my steps as if I was walking. They’re definitely very inaccurate.

I’m a cyber forensics analyst. Here’s some unbiased, factual information for context. Apple Watch detects motion + elevation/pressure patterns. It does not literally detect “a staircase.” An Apple Watch indication consistent with “climbing stairs” is sensor derived activity evidence, not necessarily direct proof that a person physically ascended a staircase. The forensic distinction matters “The device recorded a stair related metric” does not equal “the wearer climbed this particular staircase at this particular time.” That conclusion requires correlation with the underlying data and other independent evidence

My Apple Watch was amazing at alerting me that my heart rate was high when I wasn’t being active. It alerted me 3x. I was having significant abdominal pain. Went to ER, my appendix was ruptured. It was great for that. My Apple Watch also said I reach my 12 hour stand goal when I was on bed rest and had simply stretched my arms. Sooo there’s that lol. I don’t think it’s data is reliable for court use.

I went back into my Apple Watch to a couple of weeks ago, there was a day where all I did was walk up and down a beach. According to my watch, I climbed 23 flights of stairs - I didn’t. I didn’t go near stairs, I was however, driving through Wales - up and down hills to get to this beach…

Doing burpees can trigger an Apple Watch to think stairs were climbed too. I don’t think it’s as rare as he says. Also a lot depends on the age and condition of the watch. My last one was counting steps, stairs, HR wrong… all kinds of weird stuff for about a month and that’s how I knew it was time for a new watch.
