Bali, Sugreeva, and Hanuman were not necessarily members of a “monkey clan.” The term Vanara can be interpreted as referring to vana (forest) + nara (human/person), suggesting people who lived in the heavily forested regions of South India. Over time, later interpretations and artistic traditions may have portrayed the Vanaras as monkeys, transforming what may originally have been a reference to forest-dwelling human communities into a literal “monkey race.”
