@agewellwithdrstep: The #1 modifyable risk factor for dementia is hearing loss, likely associated with 7% of cases. Why? When you’re not using those listening parts of your brain anymore, those areas may shrink. In addition, you spend so much cognitive energy trying to hear, your brain may wear out. Finally, hearing loss is associated with social isolation which in itself is an independent risk factor for dementia. The landmark ACHIEVE (Aging and Cognitive Health Evaluation in Elders) clinical trial found that using hearing aids reduced the rate of cognitive decline by 48% (nearly half) over a three-year period in older adults who had a higher risk of cognitive decline Sources: • Livingston G et al., "Dementia prevention, intervention, and care: 2024 report of the Lancet standing Commission," The Lancet, 2024 • Lin FR et al., "Hearing intervention versus health education control to reduce cognitive decline in older adults with hearing loss in the USA (ACHIEVE): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial," The Lancet, 2023 #dementiaprevention #maha #longevity #agingwellness

Flossing your teeth also cuts that risk down substantially.

And the reason people don’t wear hearing aids is because of the cost.

Why aren’t there currently proven ways to reduce and/or eliminate tinnitus?

What percentage of people with dementia have hearing loss, or are deaf. How many reputable studies have been done I don’t think this is credible information about risk factors for dementia.

Is anyone in the comments listening to what she said. It’s that it’s a great way to REDUCE your chances. Not a guarantee to prevent it.

This is ridiculous… I have friends who are Deaf and use ASL and LSQ.. as long as a language is used, it does the same thing. The brain adapts. With your theory, all deaf people would have dementia. 🙄

unfortunately the study she's referencing is not definitive, I work in audiology currently and used to work in dementia care. while I have seen in real life the rapid decline in patients when they don't wear their hearing aids for a long time the study is not scientifically proven. I do believe the link as I have seen it for myself but I am very careful to tell my audiology patients about this statistic. the link is that the loss of hearing creates isolation and therefore cognitive decline due to a lack of stimulation and conversation. while I believe it to be true it is not a fact at all.

People people. What happens a lot of times is that as you lose your hearing you stop connecting with everything around you and everyone around you because you can’t hear them as well. So you tune out. The more you tune out and become less involved in daily conversations the more your memory is probably going to go. It just makes sense. And even if this isn’t completely accurate at minimum, it can make you depressed because you are no longer actively engaging with other people.

What if you have perfect hearing BUT can’t filter noise properly because of neurodivergence so at times you feel “deaf” because all the sounds together are just noise? (Genuinely thought I was going deaf and had my hearing checked because of this)
