@tempestinstruments: The Lost Voice of Alexander Graham Bell For more than a century, nobody knew what Alexander Graham Bell actually sounded like. Then researchers recovered a fragile recording from 1885, scanned it without touching it, and heard Bell identify himself in his own voice. I make videos about the strange history of sound, music, and recording technology. I also made a free orchestral blending instrument called SONA/CHROMA. Check it out here: https://tempest.audio/sonachroma/ #AlexanderGrahamBell #SoundHistory #AudioHistory #MusicHistory #RecordingHistory #Telephone #LostMedia #DidYouKnow #History #Audio

Antonio Meucci invented the telephone but couldn't afford the fee for a permanent patent. Bell paid the fee and got listed as the inventor.

Fun fact: when he invented the telephone AGB felt he needed to create a greeting, he went with “Ahoy!”, Thomas Edison challenged this greeting with his own, “Hello” and his won by popularity.

That voice is so crazy. There’s a recording of LDS Prophet Wilford Woodruff that sounds very similar.

Quick historical note: a lot of people contributed to the development of the telephone, including Antonio Meucci, Johann Philipp Reis, Elisha Gray, Lewis Latimer, and others. One especially fascinating detail: Elisha Gray filed a patent caveat for his telephone design on the exact same day Bell filed his patent application, February 14, 1876. So while calling Bell “the inventor of the telephone” is conventional shorthand, the real history is much messier than one person having a single clean claim. I’ve also received some genuinely alarming hate emails over the Meucci/Bell debate. Historical corrections and disagreement are completely welcome. Racist, religious, or abusive messages are not. If you have evidence or a source that adds to the history, please share it. I’m always interested in getting the story as right as possible.
