It doesn’t work for boys. The last thing we need is something to remind us of intimacy 😆 more swords and battle ships please

I read Phantasma last year and it was one of the worst books I‘ve read even tho the idea is not bad and had potential..

Chili Avocado :
I miss pre lockdown genre categorization when ACOTAR was simply fantasy and it wasn't held hostage by booktok, shoved in a Frankenstein's monster made up category it doesn't belong to.

And because they are trying to churn these Romantasy books out as fast as possible to make money, the books have so many plot holes, and spelling and grammar mistakes. I've made the mistake of reading several of these because people raved about them on TT and IG. Quicksilver wasn't great and Brimstone is an example of the absolute sh*tshow of a mess you end up with when a sequel is rushed. I can't get on board with the "here for the vibes only" people. Like that's great for them, but I need plot and story structure, character development, proper world building, magic system with rules, etc. I like a good romance, but far out, so many of these are failing at everything including the romance.

And why are we describing books as like fourth wing, or like Acotar

And so many of them should not be more than 2 books… but they get popular and decide to stretch out the series for money and you can tell the foundation of the series is sooo lacking

Oh I couldn’t agree more. Most of these new romantasy books completely lack an understanding of mythology and world building and a reasoning behind magic systems. It drives me CRAZY.

Totally!! I still enjoy romantasy, but I’ve become VERY PICKY. I think a lot of recent books are starting to feel too familiar..the shadowy, morally grey MMC, fae courts, the seemingly helpless FMC who turns out to be extraordinarily powerful, the same relationship beats. 😩😣
None of those things are bad on their own, but when you encounter the same ingredients often enough, the stories can start to blur together.
Taking a break and reading more HIGH-FANTASY and SCI-FI actually reminded me that I still like romance in my books…I just prefer it when it grows alongside a strong plot and world!!
Some of these characters haven’t even touched and I’m already squealing over the yearning. 😂 Give me that kind of tension!🫣📚

I want my fun and whimsical grand adventure fantasy where friends or a party go on adventures.

What really grinds me gears is when romantasy fans refuse to criticize their books and continue to consume the same thing over and over and then get mad when people don’t take the genre seriously 😵💫 A lot of them are satisfied with whatever slop an author pumps out even if it’s been made 20 times before and doesn’t encourage any growth or new ideas. The genre has a lot of potential but it needs to expand not just stay the same, it’s ridiculous and mundane.

To me is how flat it feels. You can read a passage of any of these books and you'll not know which book it is because all of them sound the same. It's like a shell with no personality, of course you can find the exception to that, but they're so little compared to how big this subgenre got. As you said, there's no worldbuilding or fantasy actually being explored, is just add fairies or dragons to it and call it a day.
Also, imo as a man, you read these male characters and it's impossible not to cringe, I haven't met a single man that acts or talks like that, they all sound like idiots 😂
