as for the name thing, there's usually more steps in between that often get lost e.g.: Aleksandr -> Aleksasha -> Sasha -> Sashura -> Shura -> Shurik

I’m not Russian but there are a lot of Russians in my country. I would teach at a Russian elementary school and I didn’t know it was okay to call someone Nastya, Sasha, Vika even if we weren’t close family or friends. I would say “Alexander” and poor Sasha wouldn’t even understand I was calling him 🥲
