Today we’re dealing with a very different combination of risks: Nearly $40 trillion in U.S. federal debt. Heavy stock market concentration, with a small group of mega-cap technology and AI-related companies carrying a significant amount of market weight. Elevated interest rates creating pressure across debt, housing, businesses and government financing. And the potential risk of stagflation — slower economic growth combined with persistent inflation rather than the deflationary pressures that dominated the 2008 financial crisis. None of this guarantees another 2008-style crash. History doesn’t repeat perfectly, and a 50%+ drawdown is not predetermined simply because one indicator resembles a previous cycle.
