"the only difference between hired and fired is one fucking letter in the alphabet" actually goes insanely hard

My office is full of Boomers, when I convert Word docs to PDFs, they think I'm a wizard.

I survived so many layoffs I had an entire warehouse office building to myself. Then the company went bankrupt and got sold to PE. They shut down that building and move me into a bigger building. Where I am still the only guy in the office. Literally me rn

I learned the awful CRM and data reporting software we have....only to have the company say if the federal government ends our funding they won't even need the software (or me). 😓

The “old” employees look at the new employees as threatening and definitely try getting them fired

i don't get American corporations, why are they regularly hiring people so that they have to regularly fire them?

I’ve been surviving layoffs at 3 different companies since 2009. In 2014 the company I was working for eliminated everyone, so I was technically laid off then (and the printer was MY thing lol). One of my current coworkers just quit and I’m already trying to move in and secure his Claude license so I can be the only person on the design team who uses it.

Very politely reminded my boss (not my current one, the one before him) during a "performance review" that not only do i know where all the bodies are buried and could bring the whole place down with a phone call to the local news, but that there were whole administrative systems still running that no one besides myself has access too. They have to use my passwords because the IT company they used went defunct 8 years ago. That boss retired a week later.

I mean…after an invite on Saturday, it stands to reason Howard may not survive another the next round of layoffs

I survived 12 years of layoffs. I even had to lay people off when I was a manager. But my time finally came in November 2024.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve survived. It’s double digits. One day my name will be called, maybe next time, maybe not, but I haven’t lost a wink of sleep over it for years now.

In high school I worked as a host at a restaurant that was slowly dying. They kept laying off people and had me work multiple positions at once - host/busser/expo/runner and finally even server, without ever formally training me on any of it. I went on vacation and came back and the doors were locked. They went under without telling me and never officially let me go so I guess technically I still work there.

get halfway skilled at excel without using chatgpt, and everyone will think your a fucking wizard. You become damn near irreplaceable, and it only takes like, three weeks max to get good at it.
