As a professional translator myself, I can say that there are a lot of people who haven’t studied translation directly. Yes, it makes things like becoming a sworn translator easier (not impossible though!). I started as a freelancer right after my bachelor’s when I started into my master’s degree and most clients don’t really care about my degrees. I think for the job as a freelancer itself I wouldn’t need a master’s (but I’ll still complete it out of personal interest and might even do a PhD). If you want to work at an official institution though, like EU, UN, etc. they usually require a master’s degree, that’s true. One way or another, you need to specialize. It seems you do community interpreting that is often badly paid, but there are other branches within the language industry that really need qualified people. It can even be a big advantage if you bring in some other expertise! Leipzig University offers very prestigious study programs in translation by the way. The translation industry is not dead, even in times of AI. As a freelancer you have to see yourself as a business owner and position yourself smartly.
