Mictlantecuhtli’s tonal is represented by the Itzcuintli (dog), because the dog is the companion who guides you through the regions of the underworld after death, helping you reach your final resting place. At the bottom, we have Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl’s parents are Mixcoatl (“Cloud Serpent”) and Chimalma (“Hand Shield”), who is associated with fertility and Tlalticpac, the earthly realm. The story tells that Quetzalcoatl descended into Mictlan to recover the bones of our ancestors. He had to journey through the nine regions of the underworld, facing many obstacles before finally reaching his destination. After recovering the bones, Quetzalcoatl ground them together with maize dough and poured blood from his own body over the ground bones. From this combination—the bones of the ancient ones and divine blood—human beings of the present era were created: the people of the Fifth Sun.
