Marissa, the fact that he was invited by colleagues and FRIENDS to watch the arclight footage, the many people he befriended on the Vat, he had people. Maybe not family persay but he had FRIENDS, people who miss him!

ik they cut it bec it wasn't plot related but I was sad they never really mention Marissa, in the movie, because she implys that Grace very much ISN'T alone. He has a forfilling life! he has a best friend, he has a restaurant where he's a regular, he has enough going on for him and his best friend to have something to discuss every Thursday

This part is interesting to me because the way it’s narrated, it has some obvious plot holes, and some questionable dialogue. Specifically, he says they’ve been doing it for nearly 20 years, but if you do the math with the other age/time references in the book, he should only be like 30 at most in this scene. I wonder if, since it’s one of the first memories that comes back to him, it’s maybe misremembered, or a combination of a bunch of different things that his brain is trying to make sense of as it fights the anesthesia.

I'm the only one bugging on "almost 20 years ago" because actually what the fuck at the end of the book he says he *thinks* he's 53... after 16 years on Erid and the 3-4 years it took to get there ... he can't be 30 and have met someone in grad school 20 before that. but if he narrated the whole story from Erid it doesn't work either it's more than 20 at that point haha

Ryland Grace had people. The memory drugs are what makes him, and Stratt, unreliable narrators. Stratt assumes he can drop everything because he holds no one. Marissa is on the Petrova TEAM before Stratt is in his timeline... it's her job to know such things. Marissa has clearance and Ryland casually talks about Space with her every week. Marissa probably recommended him... He begs Stratt to stay on after the initial findings about Astrophage not because of his Ego, because he had a panic attack in class as he looked at all the faces of the children who would encounter famine and war and begged to be involved. Begged to work on the project to save them. She told him he had nothing... he remembered having a reason to swallow his pride.

It pisses me off when fanfics pretend Grace had no friends. I get that the movie didn’t have time for Graces life as much as the book did. But he clearly was loved.

Oddity :
To me personally, Strat actions and choices only makes sense if she was considered a backup for one of the three as well. She was a historian so I think maybe the Pilot as she doesn’t have the basic acknowledge for it, but would have attended all the meetings for flying the ship and could’ve figured it out in a pinch. I truly think her character only works if she was just as willing to throw herself into the fray as she was Grace it just ended up being her instead.

I love the fanfics but it kind of gets annoying when someone tags they read the book but characterize Grace as having no friends or good experiences with friends like Marissa 😩
