@pharmunique_: Want homegrown collard greens for Thanksgiving or Christmas? You need to get them growing before the holidays get here. For Thanksgiving, aim to transplant by late September. For Christmas, aim for late October. Collards usually need about 6–8 weeks after transplanting before you can start getting a good harvest of mature leaves. A few tips: • Collards love cooler weather • Use a higher-nitrogen fertilizer, like fish emulsion, for leafy growth • Cover early with garden mesh or tulle if worms are a problem • Companion plant with onions, garlic and aromatic herbs • Harvest the larger outer leaves and leave the center growing If your area gets cold earlier, you may need to plant sooner.
