When I was 6, I figured it out and asked my mother if Santa was real. She was honest with me and said no. My pattern recognition then took over and I said, "So the Easter bunny, tooth fairy, and Jesus aren't real either, right?" She was horrified I included Jesus. Anyway, happily an atheist 😂

My cousin told me she overheard her children talking and they couldn’t remember between Santa and Jesus which one was real and which one was fake. They ended up deciding Santa was real and Jesus was fake.

I think it's also worth saying that the fact some religions abstain from participating in Christmas related things also points to the fact Christmas is a religious and therefore Santa is the god of the holiday

I both find this fascinating and a little sad....my dad wouldn't let us do any of the Santa stuff because he thought it was antiChristian/pagan worship...and it feels like this would just confirm what he always thought and I hate that very much. But it's also a fascinating perspective!

Masters degree in religion here! When I taught World Religions we used Ninian Smart’s 7 dimensions as our baseline definition of religion: doctrinal, ethical, ritual, experiential, material, mythical, and social. Belief is absolutely not required and let’s break down Santa Claus using this definition. Doctrinal (defined as a formal and systematic belief system) - Santa is associated with one holiday, there are rules and beliefs on how to interact with him and how he interacts with you. Ethical - if you’re bad, Santa gives you coal. Ritual - setting out milk and cookies. Experiential - opening presents from Santa on Xmas morning, watching the NORAD Santa tracker. Material - we literally put up Santa imagery EVERYWHERE lmao. Mythical - the mythology that his flying sled pulled by reindeer magically makes it around the entire world in just one night. Social - this one should be pretty obvious, but I’m gonna use one example: the older siblings finding out Santa isn’t real and playing along for the sake of their younger siblings.

So when Santa brings one kid an iPad for Xmas but another kid just gets a Yoyo… is the equivalent to God answering the prayers of the wealthy, but letting sick poor kids die of congenital defects or cancer. Got it ✅
