@electricalmath: A demonstration of the aliasing distortion phenomenon. To reconstruct a continuous-time signal from its samples, the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem tells us that the sampling rate must be at least twice as high as the highest frequency component of the signal (called the Nyquist frequency). If the sampling theorem is not satisfied, the reconstructed signal is distorted (different from the original), a phenomenon known as aliasing. In this example, the sampling rate is 1000 samples per second (1000 Hz). This is only capable of reconstructing signals with Nyquist frequencies up to 1000/2 = 500 Hz. We see in the simulation that a sinusoid whose frequency is below 500 Hz is accurately reconstructed. However, with faster sinusoids, we hear the pitch fold back down as the sampling rate is no longer adequate to uniquely identify the underlying signal. #electricalengineering #engineering
