The soft spots on my baby’s head FREAK ME OUT. Why are they pulsating!? 😱 ✨Expectant and new mamas - Read this post carefully and make sure you SAVE it! This is something many new parents worry about ✨ Babies are born with two soft spots - “fontanelles’ - and these are pretty amazing. They appear on the top and the back of the head where there are gaps in your baby’s skull bones. The reason these soft spots exist is because babies’ skulls are able to be moulded during the birth process to allow them to be born. The back fontanelle usually disappears within a few months of birth. The top one, however, may take up to 18 months. This can cause a bit of anxiety for new parents in the meantime as they worry about these soft spots and how to safely care for them I’m here to reassure you: don’t panic! Of course, if you are worried about how they appear, please do consult your provider - but generally speaking, fontanelles are just another normal part of newborn anatomy. Something that you might notice is these spots “pulsating” - don’t worry, it’s not your baby’s brain moving, it’s just their pulse. Just as you might see a vein in your neck throbbing if you watched closely enough. In terms of caring for your baby’s fontanelles - just be careful. Gently wipe them in the shower/bath when you’re washing your baby’s hair. Because baby’s skull is still flexible, it’s also important they don’t spend excessive time in one position as this may cause flat spots to develop. See a medical professional right away if you notice: 👶 Increased pulsating 👶 Soft spots not closing up (back one 2-3 months while top one ~18 months) 👶 Fontanelles that seem larger than they should 👶 Sunken fontanelles 👶 Increased pulsating/bulging around the area Make sure you tag a fellow mama in the comments so she knows what to look for with her baby’s fontanelles! 👇 💖 Pregnant & New Mamas make sure you follow @mamalinc as I’m about to launch my FREE prenatal, breastfeeding & sleep masterclasses! #newbornbaby #babyfontanelle #newbaby #newmommy #thirdtrimester #fourthtrimester #postpartumjourney #newbornmom #firsttimemom
