Topstitching isn’t wrong. It’s just not always the best option. When I want an opening to disappear completely, this is when I use a ladder stitch (also called an invisible stitch). This finish is ideal for closing openings in lined garments or objects like cushions, or stuffed toys. Anywhere you don’t want topstitching to show. It takes a few extra minutes, but the result is clean, soft, and nearly invisible. Using a needle and matching thread, take small horizontal stitches along the folded edge, then directly across on the other side, alternating back and forth like rungs of a ladder. Keep the stitches loose as you go, then gently pull the thread to close the seam.
