When Miu refused to call it a date for the first time, Lena barely noticed. They had ended up spending almost five hours in a small café by accident. Outside, night had fallen, the waiter had replaced the candle on their table twice, and they were still arguing about books, music, and why people tried so desperately to be liked by those who would never truly understand them. As they stepped outside, Lena smiled. “I had a great time.” “So did I.” “We should do this again.” Miu nodded. “Yeah. Just… without calling it that.” “Calling it what?” “A date.” Lena laughed. “All right.” At the time, she thought it was just one of Miu’s little quirks. Everyone had their own. She didn’t think much of it. Then more of those little quirks began to appear. Miu never said, I missed you. Instead, she texted: Are you home? She never asked: Want to have dinner together? She asked: Have you eaten yet? She never said: I want to see you. She simply showed up at Lena’s door with two cups of coffee, as though she’d just happened to be passing by. At first, it was amusing. Then it became endearing. Eventually, Lena stopped noticing the difference between words and actions. Because the actions always said so much more. Whenever her car broke down, Miu was the first to arrive. Whenever Lena worked late at the office, it was Miu who left dinner at reception without even coming upstairs. When Lena’s dog died, Miu didn’t say a single perfect thing. She simply came over in the middle of the night, sat down beside her on the floor without a word, and stayed there for hours while Lena cried. She never promised she’d always be there. She simply was. Maybe that was why, one day, Lena stopped asking herself what they were to each other. It felt as though the answer had stopped mattering a long time ago. … It happened almost a year later. They were shopping for a sofa. The old one in Lena’s apartment had finally fallen apart, and without giving it a second thought, she’d asked Miu to come with her. Miu wandered between the displays with such concentration that it looked as though she were buying furniture for her own home. She checked the fabric. Sat down. Stood up. Frowned. Made Lena move from one sofa to another. “This one’s too firm.” “What about this one?” “It’ll start squeaking in a month.” “Are you psychic?” “No. I just listen.” Lena rolled her eyes. “You’re impossible.” “And you’ll thank me later.” They laughed again. The sales consultant had been patiently following them around for nearly twenty minutes. Once they’d finally made a decision, he started filling out the paperwork. “Delivery address?” Lena gave him the street. The man entered it into his tablet, then looked up. “Would it be easier to register the purchase under one of your names, or both?” Miu answered first. “Hers.” The consultant smiled. “Perfect. Then your wife just needs to sign here.” A brief silence followed. Very brief. Lena had already opened her mouth, smiling, ready to correct him. But Miu spoke first. “She isn’t my wife.” She said it calmly. Without irritation. Without embarrassment. Just a simple correction. The consultant apologized immediately. “My apologies.” He went back to the paperwork as though nothing had happened.
