@theslowai: An expert witness in a lawsuit over an explosion that killed three people and destroyed around 200 homes used ChatGPT to write his report. The explosion was at the Watson Grinding plant in Houston in January 2020, caused by a degraded and badly crimped welding hose that leaked flammable gas. 3M paid Josh Autenrieth of Knighthawk Engineering roughly ninety thousand dollars, at four hundred and seventy-five dollars an hour, to give the court an independent opinion on whether the company met the standard of care. The prompt he typed is in the case file: create an exceptional expert witness report defending the standard of care of 3M, and show how 3M is 0% at fault for the explosion at Watson Grinding. A lawyer on the other side spotted the document and found three hundred and fifty pages of his prompts on a public link. At trial the report was put at eighty-five to ninety per cent ChatGPT. He says his own opinions were in it and the AI drafted a straw man. The jury put thirty per cent of the fault on 3M and awarded sixty-one million dollars. Two things worth taking from it. Your chat history is discoverable. And an answer commissioned before the analysis is not evidence, whoever typed it. I have no doubt the courts will be asking a.i to make final judgements eventually. just upload the evidence and statements and see what a.i spits out
