El Anatsui’s largest work to date, ‘Behind the Red Moon’ has recently been unveiled at @Tate Modern as this year’s Turbine Hall Commission. Made from thousands of metal bottle tops and fragments stitched together, three expansive abstract forms fill the vast space of the hall. Crescer no TikTok é fácil pra quem?
I didn’t realise how much it would change me. Suddenly my days revolved around feeds, naps, wake ups, nappies and figuring out what this tiny human needed from me. There are so many beautiful parts of it. The cuddles. The smiles. The little moments when Riley looks at me and I swear my heart could actually burst. But there’s another side that doesn’t get talked about as much. Sometimes I miss the version of me who could just decide to go somewhere. The version of me who could drink a cup of coffee while it was still hot. The version of me who had hobbies and plans and whole days that didn’t revolve around someone else’s needs. And then I feel guilty for even thinking that. Because I love being his mum. Both things can be true. You can be completely obsessed with your baby and still miss pieces of your old life. You can be grateful and exhausted. You can feel incredibly lucky and incredibly lonely. I’ve found that one of the things that makes motherhood feel a little lighter is knowing there are other mums feeling all of these complicated things too. Not perfect mums. Not mums with everything figured out. Just mums. Mums figuring it out one day at a time. Sometimes I look at all those little lights and think about how many women are sitting somewhere right now, wondering if they’re the only ones feeling this way. They’re not.
