In reality, there are two versions regarding who split Zeus's skull for Athena's birth. One version names Hephaestus, but there is another stating that Hera conceived Hephaestus on her own—out of sheer rage that Zeus had produced a child "by himself" (though, in fact, Metis's pregnancy had simply continued inside Zeus's body). In this scenario, Hephaestus would have been born after Athena, meaning someone else must have split Zeus's skull; this act is generally attributed to Hermes or Prometheus. I find the second version more logical, given that Metis was Zeus's first wife, making it more likely that Athena was born before Hephaestus. However, there is also the explanation that Metis's pregnancy remained suspended within Zeus's body for years—explaining why she emerged from his skull as a young woman—in which case the version where Hephaestus splits the skull makes perfect sense.
