A home is not measured in square footage. Not by the number of bedrooms. Not by granite countertops. Not by acreage. Not by what the world sees when it drives past. A home is measured by what can finally exhale there. This morning I looked through the screen door and saw my son asleep in a chair. Not because he was told to rest. Not because he had nowhere else to go. Because his body decided it was safe enough to let go. And I thought about how rare that truly is. The geckos return because they feel it. The trees have rooted because they found it. The little Ohana holds it. And perhaps, after all these years, I am learning to hold it too. I know what it feels like to live braced. To sleep with one ear open. To anticipate disappointment. To prepare for loss before loss arrives. To mistake vigilance for safety. Many of us do. But healing seems to whisper a different invitation. What if safety is not the absence of difficulty? What if safety is the presence of enough peace that the body no longer has to stand guard every moment? The geckos stretch themselves across the railing. My son falls asleep in a chair. I sit outside with coffee and a journal. The morning unfolds without asking anything from us. And in these ordinary moments, something extraordinary happens. We exhale. Not because life is perfect. Because for a little while, we no longer need to protect ourselves from it. Maybe that is what home has always been. The place where the shoulders lower. The jaw softens. The heart unclenches. The breath deepens. The nervous system stops scanning the horizon for danger. And the soul quietly says, “You can rest now.” Today, in this little Ohana surrounded by geckos, trees, coffee cups, and unfinished dreams, I think I understand. A home is not measured in square footage. A home is measured by what can finally exhale there. “The season may be temporary, but the safety being built inside it is not.” — April Mudrick Miloliʻi, Hawaiʻi #MemoirWriter #WomenWhoWrite #LifeAsLiterature #StoriesThatHeal #memoirwriter
